Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) was voted German Football Ambassador 2024 by the German fans in the “Audience Award” category. He replaces Dzsenifer Marozsán (Olympique Lyon), the 2023 award winner.

The 2014 world champion won the public vote with 71.81%, the highest approval rating in the long history of the German Football Ambassador. He was followed by Ann-Katrin Berger of NJ/NY Gotham FC with 12.62% and Antonio Rüdiger, his Real Madrid team-mate, with 9.80%.
The German Football Ambassador Public Prize is awarded to a player who is active abroad and who supports a positive image of Germany on and off the pitch. This award has been presented by public voting for over 12 years.

In the past, Ilkay Gündogan (2022), Kai Havertz (2021), Marc-André ter Stegen (2019) and Emre Can (2016), some of Toni Kroos’ colleagues from the current DFB national team, have already won the award. Together, they have won back the hearts of the German fans at the current European Championship. The public’s clear judgement in favour of Kroos will also have been supported by this.

Toni Kroos was named to the All Star Team at both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 European Championship. He has won almost every title in his unique career and is the only German player to have won the Champions League six times. In particular, his commitment to Real Madrid, to whom he moved after his time in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, made him a figurehead of German football – and known far beyond the football scene. Ilkay Gündogan recently said that he was a true German football ambassador in Spain. Now he has officially become one by winning the Popular Prize.

In addition to his outstanding performances as a player, Kroos is also socially committed – a prerequisite for making it onto the list of nominees. In 2015, he founded the Toni Kroos Foundation, which supports seriously ill children. His prize money is also donated to this organisation. He is also committed to supporting young sporting talent with the Toni Kroos Academy.

Ann-Katrin Berger, who recently moved from London to New York and is currently preparing for the Olympic Games in Paris, for which she was nominated as goalkeeper by national coach Horst Hrubesch, who is also a member of the German Football Ambassador jury, came second. She has already overcome thyroid cancer twice and is a patron of the all-female Judan Ali Football Academy.

Third place went to German defender Antonio Rüdiger, who has played successfully in Italy (AS Roma), England (Chelsea FC) and now in Spain (Real Madrid). In addition to his numerous sporting titles, he is also impressively committed to social causes, particularly in Sierra Leone, his mother’s country of origin.

Roland Bischof, President of Deutscher Fußball-Botschafter e.V., said of the award: “The fans gave a clear vote: Toni is superlative. Not only in Spain, but all over the world, he contributes to the positive image of Germany through football.” His award will be presented separately.

After Ralf Rangnick (coach award) and Toni Kroos, the third and final category (honour award) will be honoured on the final day in Berlin.
