Winfried „Winnie“ Schaefer is honoured in Jamaica.
Schaefer is a nominee for the German Football Ambassador (2014) award for his involvement with football and social projects.
Berlin and Kingston – November 29th 2013. The national coach of Jamaica Winfried Schaefer was presented in Kingston (Jamaica), his nomination for the prize of the project “GERMAN FOOTBALL AMBASSADOR”. He supports with his prize money the youth departments of two football associations along with social projects in Jamaica.
The project “GERMAN FOOTBALL AMBASSADOR” honours German coaches abroad, whose behaviour contributes positively to the image of Germany through playing football. Winfried Schaefer has already travelled to many countries as a football coach and has celebrated considerable personal and sports success. In both Thailand and Cameroon today he enjoys high respect because of his past work as a national coach. The former German Bundesliga instructor coached stars like Oliver Kahn, Mehmet Scholl and Oliver Kreuzer at the Karlsruher SC. His greatest success was the win of the African Championships with Cameroon in 2002 and also to come second with the Thailand national team in the South-East Asia Championships 2011. He has also coached clubs in Dubai, Azerbaijan and Thailand.
Schaefer: “I feel very honoured. I worked in Africa, Arabia, Southeast Asia and also recently in the Caribbean. That’s why I feel always like an Ambassador of Football. All over the World, Football is much more than just a Sport, it´s offers many possibilities to do good. Therefore, it is marvelous to be a part of the committed charity-initiative.”
He was handed the nomination document at a press conference in Kingston where the charity project was introduced. The other nominees for the prize 2014 are Monika Staab (women national team coach Qatar) and Klaus Staerk (Technical manager of the Namibian Football Association).
The winner of the award is announced by the judging panel on the 5th of May, 2014 (Uwe Seeler, Rainer Holzschuh, Dr. Martin Schaefer, Lutz Pfannenstiel, Doris Fitschen and Peter Lohmeyer).
