Integration through sport: Joe Zinnbauer supports the German Sports Club Johannesburg (Deutscher Sportclub Johannesburg - DSCJ)
Founded on the own initiative of parents of pupils at the German School Johannesburg (DSJ), the club supports and promotes the integration of children from different backgrounds – specifically children from Soweto. The club was founded in 2018 and operates independently of the school as an independent project.
In cooperation with the school, the sports club “recruits” its athletes almost exclusively from children of the DSJ. A major problem has always been the integration of the children from Soweto, due to the fact that it is difficult for the children to get back to their neighbourhoods after training – or to and from the games. With Joe Zinnbauer’s additional support, efforts are being made to better integrate the children from Soweto into the club as well as into the school in order to promote great togetherness.
As a football player under contract with Karlsruher SC and Mainz 05 in the first and second Bundesliga, among others, Josef “Joe” Zinnbauer was also active early on as a player-coach in the amateur sector. After playing for Hamburger SV and the Swiss first division club FC St. Gallen, Zinnbauer moved to South Africa to join Orlando Pirates, with whom he won the South African MTN8 Cup in 2020. There, he also became involved with the DSCJ (German Sports Club Johannesburg).
