Lothar Matthäus and Andreas Brehme, two iconic figures in German football history, were honored with the 2024 Honorary Award of the German Football Ambassador. Matthäus received the award in person, while Brehme was recognized posthumously – the first time in the association’s history that an award was given after death. The two were not only teammates during the 1990 World Cup victory and at Inter Milan, but also shared a long-standing commitment to social causes.
The prize money from the award was donated to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation, which has been supporting people with disabilities as well as those who are ill or in need through no fault of their own for over 40 years. Both Matthäus and Brehme were long-time ambassadors of the foundation and actively helped raise awareness for its mission.
With this donation, they sent a strong message in support of social responsibility and solidarity. Values they embodied both on and off the pitch.
